The paradisiacal fine golden sand beach of the neighbouring Porto Santo Island is definitely a place to visit. Stretching for miles, this beach´s soft sand is used in many spa treatments as it has been proven to have many healing properties. It is not just by chance that they call Porto Santo the “Golden Island”

In the heart of Funchal´s tourism area, nearby lido, there are a couple of beach complexes that you may visit: Clube Naval do Funchal and Ponta Gorda. Both complexes have an entrance fee.

Towards Câmara de Lobos is Praia Formosa, a Pebble Beach open to the public.

Next to Praia Formosa is a charming rocky beach resort called Doca do Cavacas. An entrance fee is also charged. Doca de Cavacas may be reached from Praia Formosa by a connecting tunnel.

Near old town of Funchal, where Avenida do Mar ends is the Praia da Barreirinha, a beautiful beach resort with restaurants, changing rooms and showers, visited almost exclusively by locals.

Natural Swimming Pools

A stunning Oasis: small islands, made by black lava rocks, invite you to lay down and catch some sun. A sole concrete barrier has transformed this paradise on water into the famous natural swimming pools of Porto Moniz and protects visitors from the fierce waves of the Atlantic. At the beach complex there is a restaurant, changing rooms and showers.

A fine yellow Moroccan sand artificial beach built in Calheta is an ideal place for fun and relaxation for families with children. Lounging chairs and umbrellas may be rented right on the beach. There are many facilities surrounding Calheta Beach such as a restaurant, changing rooms, showers and a marina (with many stores and restaurants).

In the eastern tip of the island lays a beautiful small black sand beach called Prainha. The path is not difficult to descend, but the same cannot be told when walking up the path. Lounging chairs and umbrellas are available. A restaurant, changing rooms and showers are also available.

In Santa Cruz is a beautiful stone beach with a pool and a restaurant. In addition, the biggest attraction, a water park with nine slides, two pools, snack bars and loads of fun!

On the north coast of the island a small fishing village by the name of Porto da Cruz is home to a black sand beach, which opened to the public in the Summer of 2004. It is a modern beach resort with a small restaurant area, changing rooms and WC’s.

A beautiful beach suitable for sunbathing and cooling off, is located east of the island in the city of Machico. Machico also has a pebble beach, but the main attraction is the yellow sand beach that stretches along the coast.
