Cape Girão

Cape Girão, is a nearly vertical cliff providing enticing panoramic views over the ocean, Câmara de Lobos and Funchal. Located just west of Funchal, in the city of Câmara de lobos, Cape Girão measures 580 meters and is the highest cliff in Europe, second highest in the world. Cape Girão is one of the “must see” tourist attractions of Madeira Island and is also known for its Chapel of Our Lady of Fátima, built in 1974. A cable car was built and inaugurated in August of 2003 to assist farmers in making it to the low-lying fields, something that was at one point in time only accessible by boat.
