The Santa Maria Flagship

Flaggschiff "Santa Maria de Colombo"

Sail with us and Columbus on the "Santa Maria"

Experience history by sailing on the “Santa Maria”, a real size replica of the original flagship sailed by Christopher Columbus on his expedition to America in 1492 and which was also used to explore the Madeira Islands (Madeira and Porto Santo).

The “Santa Maria” started off as one man´s dream, Dutchman Robert Wijntje. Along with seven local artisans, Robert Wijntje started building his dream in the small fishing village of Câmara de Lobos in July of 1997. On July of 1998 the “Santa Maria” was completed and set sail to Lisbon to represent “Madeira Wine” in the Expo 98. This 22 meter long ship is now a popular tourist attraction in the port of Funchal.

Feel what it was like to set sail on a 15th century flagship along the south coast of Madeira Island, while crew members (dressed up as pirates), serve the island´s traditional Madeira wine and popular honey cake (bolo de mel). During the summer, the “Santa Maria” will stop and allow it´s guests to go for a swim!
