A Market Hall full of life!
The Mercado dos Lavradores is not just a place where the freshest produce of the island is sold, but is a spectacular meeting point for yearly, monthly and weekly events for both locals and tourists. You may participate in such events as cocktail tasting, cook shows, craft fairs, antique fairs, book fairs, gastronomy fairs and the ever so popular Market night (Noite do Mercado).

Noite do Mercado - Market Night

Every Christmas, on December 23rd, locals, visiting immigrants and tourists from around the world gather around the streets of the Mercado dos Lavradores and the Rua Fernão Ornelas, celebrating together until the break of dawn.
Food and beverage stands line the streets, bars serve local traditional beverages such as poncha, wine and juices and both inside and outside the market restaurants and small snack-bars serve sweets and the ever so delicious pork sandwiches known as the "Carne de vinha d´alhos".
Sounds of music and laughter roam the air and are virtually at every corner as family and friends celebrate yet another Christmas season.
For the younger crowd, the Vespas nightclub sets up a stage at the "Praça da Autonomia" (Public Square) and plays electronic and dance music all night long until morning.
