Paúl do Mar

View of Paúl do Mar

An unforgettable coastal paradise hugged by commanding cliffs are just a few words to describe the ancient fishing village of Paúl do Mar. Today, banana cultivation and fishing are the main sources of income of the inhabitants of this town.

Just as in Camara de Lobos, in Paúl do Mar fishermen, with their large families, live in neighbourhoods close to the harbor. In the 1960´s most of the inhabitants began to immigrate to countries like Panama, in search of better living conditions.

The Paul do Mar is considered to be one of the hottest places in Madeira and very popular among surfers!

  • Be seduced by the beauty and tranquility of this picturesque village. Feel as if time has literally stopped while seeing men play cards at cafés, children playing by the water and fish drying in the sun.

  • The most important event of this village is the festival of their patron saint “Santo Amaro” which is held every year on January 15th.

A scenic hike up to Prazeres that will leave you impressed with a remarkable path consisting of 2600 steps. At the end of the hike you will be rewarded with an amazing, unique and privileged view of the sea and mountains.
