Caniçal

Monument in tribute to those who were born and raised as fishermen and whalers
Caniçal

The city of Caniçal

Lying secluded in the eastern end of Madeira Island is the fishing village of Caniçal.

Prior to 1981, Caniçal was the core of a very successful whaling industry. A museum was built at the former whaling head office location at the town centre that displays memorabilia from the whale hunting days. This museum was given the name of “Museu da Baleia” (Whale Museum).

The Caniçal Port and Fishing Activities

Caniçal has two economic pillars, one being its fishing industry, the other its port. Due to the industrial free trade zone, a successful economic infrastructure was created and constructed. This construction of this space has lead to new factories making Caniçal their home. All these factories benefit from the local harbour.

The Stone beach

Off the shore of the stone beach still exists some of the traditional Caniçal fishing boats. Here, a new bathing complex was built and is very sought after in the summer months. In the quite town centre of Caniçal the shopping options are scarce, but in compensation you will definitely find some great fish restaurants.
