The town is surrounded by rocky slopes and offers a magnificent view of the high cliffs and the narrow elongated coast.
Madalena do Mar is surrounded by banana plantations, which extend far into the inland. Apart from the long pebble beach is a beautiful coastal road running along the village.

Madalena do Mar has the largest banana plantation in Madeira Island. Every year a huge festival takes place in Madalena do Mar dedicated to this delicious product displaying the original and traditional farming methods. This is a very important cultural event for the town.

Madalena do Mar was founded in 1450 by Henrique Alemão (Henry the German). It is suspected that Henrique Alemão was really King Ladislas III of Poland, but denied his true royal identity  and asked the King of Portugal for asylum after the defeat at the Battle of Varna (1444).Until his death he was living incognito in Madalena do Mar, most likely at a house with the coat of arms below the church.
